ปกบ้านครองเมือง เรื่องเล่าแต่ก่อน ในอดีตหมู่เกาะต่างๆ ประกอบด้วยหลากรัฐ แต้รัฐมีระบบการปกครองและมีประมุขของตนเอง ส่วนใหญ่มักค้าขายเครื่องเทศเป็นสินค้าสำคัญ ชาวอาหรับเป็นชาติแรกๆ ที่เดินทางมาค้าขายที่เกาะสุมาตรา และนำเอาศาสนาอิสลามมาเผยแผ่ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2164 ฮอลันดายึดครองอินโดนีเซีย โดยตั้งบริษัท United Dutch East India Company ขึ้นที่หมู่เกาะอินเดียตะวันออก นอกจากจุดประสงค์เพื่อทำการค้าแล้ว ยังทำหน้าที่แสวงหาอาณานิคมให้แก่ฮอลันดาด้วย จนกระทั่งในสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง กองทัพญี่ปุ่นได้เข้ามายึดครองอินโดนีเซีย ล้มรัฐบาลอาณานิคมของฮอลันดา ไม่นานหลังจากญี่ปุ่นแพ้สงคราม ฮอลันดาพยายามกลับมาปกครองอินโดนีเซียเหมือนเดิม ชาวอินโดนีเซียภายใต้การนำของ ดร.ซูการ์โนและ ดร. โมฮัมหมัด ฮัตตา จึงรีบร่วมกันประกาศอิสรภาพเมื่อวันที่ 17 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2488 (รวมระยะเวลาตกอยู่ใต้อาณานิคมกว่า 300 ปี
